Our story

Welcome to Čara wine oasis of the island Korčula

At the heart of the island of Korčula lies Čara, a small agricultural village of hardworking industrious people who live, work and breathe for grapevine. The green oasis overlooking the sea and the fertile soil of Čara have long preserved one of the most beautiful stories about a man, wine and grapevine.

The wine-growing sites of Čara share their name with one of the oldest villages on the island of Korčula. This picturesque village is blessed with ideal weather conditions, high-quality soil composition and winds that aerate the valley.

Tradition poured into premium wines

More than half a century ago Čara was recognized as the birthplace of the native island wine variety pošip, which in 1967 earned the distinction of being the first Croatian white wine with a protected designation of origin. Twenty years later, the modern agricultural cooperative Pošip was founded in Čara and it still continues to produce the first authentic, full-fledged POŠIP wines.

Pošip The legend of a wine enchanted by the sun

The legend tells the story of a wild grapevine that was accidentally discovered in a forest, climbing up a wild pomegranate shrub towards the sun. And thus was born pošip, named after the phrase “po šipku” (“up a pomegranate”). Carefully preserved, tended by a land worker’s hand, and officially protected since 1967; pošip is the first Croatian wine with a protected designation of origin.

Born in Korčula

A DNA analysis from 2002 scientifically determined the autochthony of the variety. The small pošip variety from the Croatian south thus gained the right to stand alongside the greatest wine varieties of the world, and our Čara gained a unique opportunity to present itself as a wine destination with a story and a tradition.

In Čara, to this day we continue to proudly preserve one of

A tale of tradition and technology coming together...

The tradition of winemaking and viticulture in Čara dates back thousands of years to ancient times. Today it is inextricably linked with the latest technology of modern winemaking. When ancient knowledge meets new optimized processes, along with constant investments and innovations, it creates one of the most valuable white wines of the Adriatic and Croatia.

THE HARDWORKING WINE GROWERS OF ČARA JOINED TOGETHER IN THE “POŠIP” AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE TO PRESERVE AND PROMOTE THIS NOBLE VARIETY.

ON THE FERTILE SOIL OF THE ČARSKO POLJE FIELD...

OUR JOURNEY HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN — FOR ALL THOSE WILLING TO EXPERIENCE WINES ENCHANTED BY THE SUN.

Surrounded by fig, almond, carob, arbutus and orange trees, Pošip grows in its primordial environment of Čara.

More than 100 wine growers of the cooperative take advantage of the fertile and distinctive red soil, which is rich in stone and skeletal limestone. They continue to cultivate their vineyards “the old-fashioned way”, traditionally and mostly by hand.

This commitment to tradition, combined with colorful old-timey tractors, creates distinctive scenes that give a special atmosphere and a unique charm to the viticulture of Čara.

With over 2700 hours of sunshine a year and about 900 L of precipitation per square meter, pošip from Čara is special because it grows in its natural surroundings… This is pošip’s home.

Rukatac

Premium wine

Playful, refreshing, seductive

Rukatac is a premium wine produced from an ancient variety of the same name, also known as maraština, that is widely distributed in many Adriatic vineyards. In čarsko polje it achieves exceptional quality. Yellow-greenish in color with fresh, discreet and also sharp varietal fragrances, which in the terroir of Čara call to mind a freshly crushed rue and a fragrant Mediterranean meadow. With a fine bouquet, as well as a dry and vibrantly refreshing taste. It is served at a temperature of 12 °C, and pairs best with crabs, white fish and young cheese.

  • Alcohol 12.5%
  • Wine type Dry
  • Wine color White

IN THE ORIGINAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE PRIMORDIAL MEDITERRANEAN

#ENCHANTEDBYTHESUN

Ever since the olden days, we have been toasting with wines from the terroir of Čara and saying…

2019.

“Since ancient times we’ve all agreed: it’s the only remedy you need!”

Our story continues...

The redesign of our visual identity that started with the 2019 harvest is a perfect fit for the variety. You will first feel the berries of Pošip in your hand, on the label itself. No ornamentation and false pomp, only the well-known name and the colors of the sun and gold. The shape of the bottle suggests a pronounced aroma, and the first sip of its layers the minerality of the wine.

As said a long time ago, once you’ve tasted a grape from čarsko polje, you’ll no longer enjoy any other variety! You will look for the magic of that taste, texture and aroma, of the sun and gold in all other varieties you try. So did those before you and so will those who are yet to come!

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS The greatest reward any winemaker can ask for is the enchantment that arises between the wine and those who taste it, and the greatest recognition is when this enchantment is long-lasting and constantly deepened. We’re sure that our wines will forever enchant your heart and your palate. We also proudly hold awards and recognitions that testify to the years of effort and work which we have dedicated to creating premium wines and preserving our tradition. Some of the most significant titles: 1991–2015: Sabatina Champion Award 1999: Wine Masters Challenge Portugal — Bronze Wine Leaf Award 2002: Vinovita — Silver medal 2002: Crystal Glass by Večernji list 2009: Mostar Wine Fair — Gold medal 2011: Wine in the Tradition of Living — Gold certificate 2016: 58th International wine evaluation in Ljubljana — Gold medal 2020: International Wine Challenge

“Enjoy Pošip like we enjoy preserving the variety and creating the best wines of the Adriatic and Croatia!”
